The Vision of 1884 Plaza

The vision for 1884 Plaza began with a desire to honor the historic significance of the Martin County Convent while creating a beautiful, welcoming place where the community could gather, celebrate, and make memories for generations to come.

Guided by the work of landscape architect Jason Hodges of Prairie Workshop and archaeologist Michael Bradle of American Archaeology Group, the campus was thoughtfully designed to reflect the original character and layout of the historic site. At the heart of 1884 Plaza is the reconstructed historic quadrangle, featuring the original Monastery Building, Marienfeld Hall—built on the site of the original East Building—and Grelton Pavilion, which stands where the original North Building once stood. St. Joseph’s Chapel, located on the original grounds of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, completes the historic story of the campus, while a beautiful central fountain brings the entire quadrangle together.

On the west side of the historic Monastery, the Sisters of Mercy Garden offers a peaceful and picturesque outdoor gathering space. The garden features a stage, a vine-covered pergola, a replica of the original windmill with a water feature, and six lush raised flowerbeds. Nearby, spacious, temperature-controlled outdoor restrooms were thoughtfully placed on the site of the original bathhouse, blending modern comfort with the history of the grounds.

The vision for 1884 Plaza continues to grow. Future plans include additional landscaping on the east side of the campus, a vineyard, and the Hospitality House, which will provide an inviting space for guests to gather, dine, and enjoy the surrounding grounds.

Today, 1884 Plaza is more than a historic site—it is a place where history, community, and celebration come together. The campus provides a unique setting for historic tours, retreats, seminars, lectures, art exhibits, wine tastings, family reunions, celebrations, weddings, concerts, and holiday events.

Preserving yesterday. Celebrating today.

Creating memories for tomorrow.
