Educational Opportunities

Plaza 1884 offers a variety of educational opportunities for educators and students.


March 21, 2023, Teacher Open House: The Spirit of West Texas 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM

  • Presentation:  How making history “come alive” for students helps them retain information. 
  • An opportunity for local teachers to see a presentation of all the educational opportunities provided by 1884 Plaza.
  • Materials to view, tours, Q&A
  • T-TESS & TEKS addressed (see below*)
  • Lunch provided


Educational Opportunities Plaza 1884 Offers:


In-class Instruction

  • Travel to schools to do presentations about the historical significance of the Carmelite Monastery and Sisters of Mercy Academy to the West Texas development and culture.
  • Lectures and activities can be tailored to TEKS being taught in the classroom. 
  • Activities can be implemented into the presentation.
  • All grade levels can be serviced.

Campus Tour

  • A basic oversight tour of the historical significance of the Carmelite Monastery and Sisters of Mercy Academy and the importance it had on West Texas development and its culture.
  • An in-depth tour of the Carmelite Monastery and Sisters of Mercy Academy and the importance of both in the development of West Texas and its culture.
  • All tours can be adjusted to meet age-level appropriateness.
  • Activities can be implemented into tours upon instructor's request to reinforce the material.

Literature

  • A general overview book, The Spirit of Mercy on the West Texas Winds, for purchase.  Parts of the book can be lectured over or incorporated into class lectures or campus tours.
  • Soon we will offer a children’s book that will offer children a glimpse into the life of a student attending the academy. This book can be read in class lectures or campus tours. It will also be available for purchase. 



Regenia Hunt, director at 1884 Plaza, taught multiple grade levels for over 20 years and teaches two dual credit classes. She holds multiple teaching certificates and has a Masters Degree in English.  She will work hard to produce an in-class presentation or campus tour that will meet TEKS requirements and make the presentation appeal to students with various learning styles. 

Other board members that have in-depth knowledge of the history of the Monastery and Academy are also available for in-class presentations and tours.
